This morning I spoke with a guide (pictured, right) from Color Sport Club, who told me, “I love your site! I’m going to take a guest from Taiwan (pictured, left) on a backcountry tour through the Uchu backcountry gate.” The visitor from Taiwan then added, “I have been to Japan several times, but this is my first time in Hakuba. I’m excited to enjoy JAPOW!” Skies this morning were calm and the sun was shining.

The Uchu backcountry gate was closed yesterday, but was open today. I decided to head to the Snake Course (pictured), which reopened yesterday. The Snake Course was groomed with near-powder wet snow conditions. I spotted some evidence of an avalanche in the ungroomed area (pictured, upper left ) at the beginning of the course, but there was plenty of snow and no bushes or exposed dirt on the groomed section.

The Ikenota Slope (pictured), Ipponmatsu Course, Itadaira Course, and Hiedayama Forest Course were groomed, and each had moderately firm powder snow surfaces! My edges firmly gripped the snow and my skis slid well, and I took advantage of the great conditions and enjoyed carving on the wide-open Ikenota Slope first thing in the morning when it was empty.

The Giant Course, which reopened just yesterday, was full of tracks, but was once again closed today. In its place, the Hiedayama Course 2 was reopened. There was an area on the last part of the course, where the base had largely melted, and although it was white and still covered with snow, there were many exposed bushes, so care was needed when skiing through.
