Today I ran into a group of three snowboarders from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (pictured), with the man in the middle telling me, “I love your site! We went all the way to the 9th Pair Lift hoping to ride the Sky View Slope, but came back because we found out that the No. 10 Pair Lift will be closed all day.” With expectations high after last night’s heavy snowfall, I too was about to head to the top of the ski resort, but hearing the news I hurriedly headed to Highway.

I had some fun skiing at speed on the first half of the Highway Course (pictured) and the Kamoshika Course, where there was around 10 cm of heavy new snow on top of moderately soft, wet groomed surfaces. (Probably just at the beginning of the day.) The second, ungroomed half of Highway had about 40 cm of heavy, fresh snow that was very hard to get out of if you got stuck.

There were some lingering snow flurries in the morning, but the sun began to come out around 9:00. I had a conversation with a family from Osaka (pictured), who told me, “We come to the Hakuba area once a year, but this is our first time in Hakunori. Today we are staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel.” The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) was in good condition, with about 5 cm of fresh snow on top of a moderately soft, groomed wet snow base.

The 30 to 40 cm of new snow on the ungroomed portion of the Rabbit Course was also heavy. I had a chat with a snowboarder from Taiwan (pictured) that told me in fluent Japanese, “I love your site! I’ve been living in Otari Village for between 6 and 7 years. I love Otari and Japan. It’s basically spring snow conditions today, but it’s still fun.”
