The snow flurries that had been falling into the early morning hours came to a stop, and the sun began to shine on the slopes just as the resort opened for business around 8:30. The Hotel B Course and Hotel C Course (pictured) were groomed with moderately firm, easy-to-ski wet snow. Incidentally, the Champion B Course is closed as of today in preparation for the 1st Annual Myoko Akakura Head Cup to be held from 2/28 (Wed.) to 3/1 (Fri.).

On the Champion Beginner Course (pictured), which connects Akakura Kanko to the neighboring Akakura Onsen Ski Resort, my skis slid well on the well-packed groomed wet snow. Due to the suspension of the Champion No. 1 Quad, it is not possible to go directly back up after skiing down to the bottom, so care should be taken. You can, however, take the free shuttle bus from the entrance of the Akakura Parking Lot back to the Sky Cable boarding station. (*The service runs between 10:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. only on weekends and holidays.)

There was about 20 cm of fresh, fluffy snow covering the base of the ungroomed Champion A Course (pictured)! My skis also ran well on the Joshi Kokutai Course, which had a firm, groomed wet snow surface. A thin layer of fog blanketed the slopes from time to time, but wasn’t thick enough to affect the skiing.

I spoke with three local residents from Myoko (pictured), who told me, “We’ve seen the Snownavi site before! All three of us are from different hometowns, but we work and ski in Myoko in the winter. We are going to enjoy some backcountry skiing today.” After talking with them, they skied a run on the ungroomed Hotel A Course, which had about 20 cm of fresh snow.
