This morning I had a conversation with three visitors from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We come here once a year for a two-night, three-day stay starting on a Sunday as an annual tradition. It was snowing hard yesterday and the day before, so the conditions are good today.” The officially reported snow depth, which had decreased to 150 cm due to the warm weather in mid-February, has bounced back to 205 cm due to the on-and-off snowfall since 2/22 (Thurs.) and the heavy snow since 2/26 (Mon.)!

Calm cloudy skies gradually gave way to blue skies as the morning progressed. The groomed Sekimi Slope (pictured), Elegant Course (first photo), and Downhill Central Course had moderately firm wet snow conditions that made it possible to ski comfortably at speed. The Sekimi Slope was crowded with lesson participants and beginner to intermediate groups of international visitors.

The Utopia A Course (pictured) and Utopia B Course (fourth photo), as well as the Family Slope, were also groomed with moderately firm, wet snow bases. These three courses were relatively empty, so I was able to carve without worrying about the people around me. There was a thin layer of fresh snow on the Family Slope.

In other news, Akakura Onsen Ski Resort is offering free ski lessons for elementary school students every Sunday until 3/24 (Sun.). (*Limited to 40 students per day, reservations required, the next lesson is on 3/3 (Sun.)) In addition to the lesson itself, elementary school students receive a free lift ticket, making for a fantastic value.
