Sugadaira REPORT

2024.03.03150cm / Sunny

On 3/3 (Sun.), a cosplay event was held at Sugadaira Pine Beak where those in full costume were eligible to purchase one-day Sugadaira Kogen Pine Beak lift tickets for JPY2,500. I spoke with a staff member, who was also in full cosplay, at the event booth, and was told, “Thanks to the large amount of new snow between 2/29 and 3/1, the slopes are almost all open.” More than anything, I was extremely impressed by how good the cosplayers were at skiing!
[Omatsuyama GO-no-hara]

Under the bright blue Sugadaira sky, many cosplayers commented to me that they were fans of Snownavi and asked me to take their picture. Others talked about how the temperatures were quite comfortable, and how the weather was perfect for an event, but one person said, “I was expecting very firm snow, but for carving enthusiasts the conditions are a little too soft today.” The Omatsuyama (pictured) and Champion courses had groomed, well-packed wet snow surfaces that had a powdery feel and were easy to ski.

From GO-no-hara (first photo) to the Family Course, there were excellent, moderately firm, groomed powder snow conditions, while the Shin-Fujimi Course and Rabbit Course were groomed with moderately firm, “powdery” wet snow. The ungroomed part of Grand Prix was covered in tracks, but the soft base made it easy to maintain control.
[Omatsuyama 5th Pair]

I had the privilege of running into No-Face (pictured) from Spirited Away today, amongst others, and a racer who rode the Omatsuyama 5th Pair with me told me, “There are a lot of cosplayers here, so it’s kind of a fun atmosphere. I’m here from Hokkaido for a training camp for the competition that starts on 3/4 (Mon.).” In contrast to the clear start to the day, the sky began to fill with clouds around 11:00 a.m.
