Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2024.03.04230cm / Snowy

I ran into Akita-san (pictured) from the jewelry brand niconeru before the resort opened, and she told me, “I love your site! I’ve been staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel and skiing since yesterday. We got a lot of snow overnight!” Indeed, we’ve had a string of significant snowfall on 2/26 (Mon.), 2/27 (Tue.), 2/28 (Wed.), 3/1 (Fri.), 3/2 (Sat.), and today, 3/4 (Mon.).
[Wakaguri Central Slope]

The falling snow picked up in intensity around 4:00 this morning, and as a result, there was around 20 to 25 cm of fluffy fresh snow covering the groomed, moderately soft powder snow surface of the Wakaguri Central Slope, and 25 to 30 cm of light new snow on top of the moderately firm, groomed surface of the Highway Course (pictured)! The first group of skiers getting off the No. 3 High-Speed Pair laid down fresh tracks on the first half of Highway before dropping into the ungroomed Snake and Expert courses.
[Highway Course]

There was about 30 to 40 cm of light, fresh snow covering the steep, ungroomed Expert Course (pictured), and even though the underlying surface was marked with somewhat hard bumps and tracks, I thoroughly enjoyed my run with almost no bottoming out. Other people on the slope were delightfully exclaiming how good the snow felt, and I was pleased to be able to take some decent pictures of the Expert course, which I figured would no longer be possible at this point of the season.

Since the No. 10 Pair Lift was closed due to avalanche danger, powder seekers concentrated on the No. 3 High-Speed Pair. Two local residents of Otari Village (photo) riding the lift gave me a friendly greeting, saying, “Hey Snownavi! We always check your reports.” The Rabbit, Kamoshika, and Hakunori Family courses each had moderately firm, groomed powder snow surfaces that were covered with 20 cm, 15 cm, and 10 cm of fresh snow, respectively.
