Sugadaira REPORT

2024.03.05150cm / Cloudy

Sugadaira Kogen, with its pleasant, wide-open slopes, is experiencing ideal March conditions, with the significant snowfalls from 2/29 (Thurs.) to 3/2 (Sat.) bringing the official snow depth total to 150 cm; more than 70 cm more than the same period last year. This morning, the blue sky that was visible around 7:30 a.m. gradually gave way to a dreary, cloud-covered sky.

Ura Taro Schi Heil (pictured), is a single slope with a flat surface that is appropriate for intermediate and advanced skiers. Today, the groomed, well-packed wet snow with a powdery feel made for comfortable turns. I was impressed watching skilled skiers taking advantage of the conditions and the gradient and skiing down with sharp turns at high speed.

I spoke with two guests from Chiba Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We are staying at the Sugadaira Sun Hotel (the beige building in the first photo) for the night and boarding through a package tour with Travel Inn. This slope is pretty, steep, I wonder if we’ll be able to make it down.” About half of Shirogane Schwarz was groomed, with a firm wet snow surface, while the other half had moderately soft snow marked with tracks and surface bumps.

The Ura Taro Beginners Course, Shirogane Rinkan Course, and Taro Long Course (pictured) were also groomed with firm wet snow bases. My skis slid well even on the gentle slopes, and I found it easy to ski. It’s important to note that because Omote Taro’s Grand Lift is out of service due to mechanical trouble since 3/3 (Sun.), it is possible to ski the Omotaro slope, but not possible to take the lift back up from there, so please be careful. (*There are signs warning about this.)
