The cold and snow are continuing. Usually, when a low-pressure system passes over the southern coast, the temperature often rises a little in the northern Shinshu area, but since late February, the temperatures have remained cold even in those instances. The snow that was falling this morning on my way to the ski resort had a high moisture content, but out on the slopes, it was quite dry and light.

Champion (pictured) and Paradise were groomed with moderately firm, wet snow surfaces. Champion was blanketed in a thin layer of fog, but it wasn’t enough to interfere with skiing, and I was able to enjoy fun turns from top to bottom. I noticed a number of skiers entering the tree areas such as Riverline and Crystal Bowl, which were covered with 10 cm of fresh, slightly wet snow.

Sky View, Sky Love, and the second half of Crystal (fourth photo) were also groomed with moderately packed wet snow bases. The No. 15 Triple, which serves Sky View and Sky Love, opened at 9:00 a.m., and visitors were slow to turn up, so I was able to carve fresh tracks on the beautiful corduroy-patterned surfaces.

I spoke with a group of students from Tokyo (pictured), who commented, “We came to Madarao Kogen for the first time on a one-day bus tour. The slopes are broad and there’s plenty of snow, so it’s really nice. We also went to X-JAM Takaifuji and Ryuoo Ski Park this season.” Around 9:30, large flakes of snow began coming down hard.
