The amount of snow that fell between yesterday afternoon and this morning was much more than expected! Weak winds were blowing from the north at Usagidaira (pictured) first thing in the morning, and snow was coming down hard. I was thrilled to see the slopes along the Alpen Quad completely covered in a deep blanket of new snow. A member of the ski resort staff told me, “I didn’t think it would snow this much in March.”

I was torn between Usagidaira and Kurobishi, and ultimately decided to head to Kurobishi. In the ungroomed area along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), a lot of people were completely covered in white as they skied down through the 60 or so cm of fresh, fluffy, high-quality snow. One of them said to me, “It’s so deep today!”

On days like this, it’s not only on the upper portion of the resort where you can enjoy loads of fresh powder. Today the ungroomed area of the Skyline Course (pictured) also had 50 to 60 cm of fluffy, fresh snow! As for the groomed slopes, there was about 15 cm covering the surface along the Kurobishi Quad, 10 to 15 cm on the center portion of the Skyline Course, and 2 to 3 cm on the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track.

Even the Kitaone Course (pictured), a steep ungroomed slope on the lower part of the mountain, had 40 cm of fluffy, fresh snow! I occasionally bottomed out on the moderately firm base marked with tracks and surface bumps, but still enjoyed all the new snow. The Sakka Wave, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope were in good conditon, with 5 to 10 cm of new snow on top of groomed, moderately firm powder snow bases.
