Nishidateyama is a ski resort with famous courses where the W-CUP has been held several times, and the two quad lifts (one of them with a hood) allow skiers to quickly and efficiently lap the terrain. I spoke with a skier from Osaka (pictured), who said, “Is that you Snownavi? I love your site. I brought my powder board, so I’m looking forward to the snow forecast for tonight.”

The Nishidateyama Middle (Intermediate) Course (first photo) and Beginner course were groomed with moderately firm, easy-to-ski powder snow surfaces. The World Cup Course (pictured) was groomed with well-packed, “powdery” wet snow. My edges firmly gripped the steep slope, and I was able to make controlled turns.

The 36th Annual National High School Ski Competition is underway at Giant, taking place across two-thirds of the course’s total width. The sound of slalom gates smacking the firm, groomed wet snow surface as the athletes skied past echoed through the air. By the way, tomorrow, 3/9 (Sat.), is “Okushiga Day,” and a ¥900 discount will be offered for one-day Okushiga Kogen lift tickets.
[Giant・Giant Slope]
Going back to first thing in the morning, I enjoyed the moderately firm, groomed powder snow slopes at Takamagahara Mammoth. I crossed the overpass bridging Prefectural Route 471 on skis, then rode the Nishidate Second Triple. The sky was calm and streaked with thin clouds, and I overheard skiers coming off the Nishidate Hoodie Quad commenting about how clearly you could see the Ichinose area, and strategizing about whether to take another run, or head over to Takamagahara.
