With it being both a Sunday and the day after the 4th and 5th Pairs were closed due to heavy snowfall, it was inevitable that Cortina would be bustling with people, particularly those on the hunt for powder. The day parking spaces were 90% full by 7:30 a.m., and there was a huge line for the 2nd Quad. I spoke with two visitors from Shiga Prefecture (pictured, right), who told me “We love your site! We got in line at 6:30 a.m., but the first person in line was here by 5:30. We didn’t expect people to get here that early…”

Due to the heavy snowfall from the day before yesterday through to this morning, the official snow depth reached 300 cm for the first time this season. The smooth surface of the ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1 (pictured) had been fully reset, and when stuck my ski pole into the snow, it went in all the way down to the grip without any resistance. The powder was deep and soft, and had excellent flotation!

The Itadiara Course (pictured) had basically the same fluffy powder snow conditions as Hiedayama 1! The Hiedayama Rinkan Course was groomed with a soft powder snow surface topped with about 10 cm of fresh snow that flowed smoothly over my skis. The Ipponmatsu Course and Ikenota Slope (first pictured), which both had about 5cm of light fresh snow, also had soft, easy-to-ski, groomed powder snow bases.

The Kids Park was also covered with abundant fresh snow. I spoke with the mother of a family from Toyama Prefecture (pictured), who was making a snowman with her daughter. She told me, “We stayed at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba last night. The snow in the kids’ park is great! My husband and our older daughter are out skiing.” Incidentally, the tubing course underwent major maintenance yesterday, making it even more enjoyable.
