Cortina REPORT

2024.03.13290cm / Snowy

Because of the increase in avalanche danger due to the heavy snowfall since yesterday, the 4th and 5th pairs were closed for the whole day. The middle and lower areas of the mountain were still skiable, and the fresh snow was on the heavy side this morning, likely due to the mild temperatures. The groomed Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) had a well-packed wet snow base. The area to skier’s right must have been groomed early, because there was around 20 cm of fresh snow with a noticeably high moisture content on top.

The 2nd Quad started moving around 8:45 and 9:30 for the 3rd Quad. Strong, intermittent gusts from the north whipped up fresh snow and caused some temporary whiteouts (pictured). The Rabbit Course (pictured) was groomed with a “powdery” wet snow surface topped with 15 to 25 cm of heavy new snow.

The Snake Course was also groomed, with a firm, wet snow surface that had a powdery fell. The heavy new snow on top of the groomed base had been greatly affected by the wind resulting in huge variation in the amount of snow from point to point. There was between 10 to 20 cm at the beginning of the run, and 1 to 2 cm in the middle to the end of the course (pictured). I spoke with a group of six visitors from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! It’s the first time for the whole family to come to Cortina to ski. It’s fun because there are a lot of courses. We stayed at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba last night. The snow is nice and fluffy today.”
[Snake Course]

The snow was fluffy in areas where tracks had been laid. On the ungroomed Kamoshika Course (pictured), which had 20 to 25 cm of heavy fresh snow, I took a direct line down and enjoyed the floating feeling. The Ikenota Slope had 1 to 2 cm of new snow on top of a powdery, firmly-groomed wet snow base that was easy to ski.
