Since the end of February, low pressure systems off the southern coast have resulted in winter weather patterns that have brought Ontake a lot of snowfall, even into March. Today I spoke with a snowboarder from Shiga Prefecture (pictured, right), who told me, “I love your site! I came here for a day trip to board with my snowboarding & windsurfing friends. Ontake is my home ‘home mountain.’”

The Central Course (pictured) and Paradise Course were groomed with moderately tight “powdery” wet snow. It was exhilarating to ski down the 1,300-meter-long Central Course non-stop with today’s clear skies and stellar views. Afterward, I took the No. 7 Quad, which started running about 15 minutes later than scheduled, to the Panorama Course.

The Panorama A Course had a firm, groomed wet snow surface with a powdery feel, and I couldn’t help but look up and marvel at the sight of nearby Mt. Ontake (3,067m) I had a chat with a snowboarder from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, right) who remarked, “I started snowboarding after I turned 40, and I enjoy it so much that some days I come here alone. I love Ontake and I’m a season pass holder.”

The Expert Course (pictured) and Mikasa Wing Course were groomed to the width of a single grooming machine in the center of the course, and had soft wet snow surfaces that felt like powder. The ungroomed areas on both sides of the Expert Course had 20 to 30 cm of fresh groomed snow with a windpacked outermost surface. Two visitors were eagerly making moguls in the area to the skier’s right.
