One of the attractions of Ninja Snow Highland, which is only open on weekends and holidays, is that the snow that accumulates during the week remains untouched. This morning skiers were clear, and a line of visitors with powder boards lined up at the NINJA lift early on. I had a chat with a man from Nagano’s Ueda City (pictured), who remarked, “I’ve seen the Snownavi site before. The snow quality was great on the shaded Sasuke Slope (pictured).”

I heard excited cheers and shouts coming from here and there. The smooth, untouched surface of Alekoko (pictured) looked incredibly inviting, but I overheard some people who dropped in on Alekoko (pictured) commenting about how the surface was crust. I had to see for myself, and took a direct line down the slope, enjoying the dry, soft layer of about 40 cm of snow beneath the curst, without trying to force a turn.

I was greeted by a skier from Chiba prefecture who told me they were a fan of Snownavi, and added, “I ski Sugadaira on weekdays and come to Ninja on weekends. The groomed snow first thing in the morning today was really good.” The groomed Blackbeat Course had excellent, moderately packed powder snow conditions! Gomarugo (pictured), Shinko (fourth photo), and Nirei had well-packed, groomed wet snow surfaces.

I caught up with two season ticket holders from Chiba Prefecture (pictured), who said, “We use the Snownavi site a lot! This is a very fun resort where you can enjoy powder and enjoy playing with the terrain on some courses. We just got back done doing that on Shinko.” By around 10:00 a.m., the snow surfaces had become loose and moist.
