REPORT

With only a little more than a week left in the season (3/24 Sun. is the last day), Hakuba Sanosaka has nearly three times as much snow as at the same time last year thanks to the multiple big dumps of snow that have come since the beginning of March. This morning, like yesterday, was another clear and sunny start. On the groomed Paradise Slope (pictured), with its moderately firm granular snow surface, members of the JSC Hakuba Sanosaka Racing Center were practicing slalom.

Perhaps it was Asian Dust or pollen in the air, but the view of Lake Aoki from the Lake Down Course (pictured) was hazy and spring-like. The Lake Down Course (pictured) was in the sun since the morning, and the surface snow was already spring-like. My skis still slid well and I was able to repeat turns comfortably.

The groomed New Paradise Slope (pictured) had slushy, granular snow conditions. I was careful not to dig my edges in too deeply. The slopes were well maintained, and so too was the mogul lane at the end of the 5th Pair. The loose, soft snow even made it less technical.

I spoke with a father (pictured, left) from Shizuoka Prefecture, who told me, “I love your site. My daughter loves Hakuba Sanosaka, and we have been here about 10 times this season alone.” The surface of the Paradise Slope (pictured) was growing moist by around 9:30 am. The groomed Paradise Downhill was mostly shaded, so the granular snow surface was slow to soften and remained moderately packed. [Paradise Slope]
