The Hakuba Happo-One “Kids Snow” ski competition was held beginning at 9:00 a.m. on 3/17 (Sun.), on Nakiyama’s Public Course, with 61 competitors entered in 8 different categories: 1st and 2nd graders, 3rd and 4th graders, 5th and 6th graders, and junior high schoolers (further divided by male and female). Kicking things off was a demonstration skier from Austria known as Raby-chan (second photo), and ski school instructors showing off their skiing skills.

There were four different disciplines, with the total score for all disciplines used to determine the overall standings, and awards given to the 1st through 6th-place finishers in each category. Parents eagerly watched their children ski their competition runs from the side of the course and the finish line.

Two boys who had just finished skiing (pictured) asked me to take their picture. One of them told me, “The spring snow made it hard to go fast, but I skied well.” The other boy added, “I skied better than I did in practice.”

Strong winds gusted intermittently from the west at the top of the resort forced the Alpen Quad to suspend operation. The Panorama Course (pictured) and Riesen Slalom Course were groomed with moderately firm granular snow surfaces. I want to thank everyone who graciously greeted me on the slopes over the weekend. Also, I don’t usually get to say this, but thank you to all the Snownavi readers for always making the slopes so much fun!
