This morning I came across a family from the U.S. (pictured), who told me, “We’re from Hawaii where it’s warm all year round, but we can ski. The conditions are good today!” It was a pleasant, sunny start to the day with wispy clouds stretched out in front of the sun. The Rabbit Course (pictured) was groomed with a well-packed surface composed of a mix of wet snow and fresh snow that had fallen earlier this morning, and was exquisitely easy to ski.

On the contrary, the opening of Hiedayama Course 2 and 3, Hiedayama Ridge, Giant, Itadaira Ridge, and Itadaira Forest was delayed due to poor conditions. The Ikenota Slope (pictured) and Ipponmatsu Course had firm, groomed wet snow bases that my edges held well to, and I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns.

The ungroomed Kamoshika Course (pictured) had 1 to 2 cm of fresh, slightly wet snow on top of a moderately firm base with few surface tracks. I was surprised to find that it was much easier to ski than it looked. The groomed Snake Course also in good condition thanks to its firm wet snow surface.

I had a chat with a snowboarder from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, left) who remarked, “I check the Snownavi site from time to time. This is my first time at Cortina this season. My other two friends (one is still on their way down the slope) are snowboarding in Hakuba for the first time. Conditions are good today!” All of the groomed slopes were very easy to ski today, thanks to the few centimeters of fresh snow. In other news, spring skiing discounts will kick in the day after tomorrow, 3/21 (Thurs.).
