The Kyoto Prefecture High School Spring Ski Championships (Rookie Competition) is being held at Kumanoyu from 3/25 (Mon.) to 3/27 (Wed.), and on this first day, the Third A Course was cordoned off for training. I spoke with a group of students from Doshisha High School (pictured) who told me, “We’re nervous because this is our first competition. We’ll do our best to get good results!”

It was a warm start to the morning with the temperature hovering around 0℃, and raindrops began to fall around 8:30 when the lifts started operating, but luckily they did not intensify. The Third A Course (pictured) was groomed with a moderately firm granular snow surface. My edges bit well and my skis slid smoothly, making it easy to ski.

The Second Beginner Course (pictured) and the Fourth Beginner Course were also groomed with slightly loose granular snow, while the groomed Umanose Course had a moderately packed granular snow base similar to the Third A Course. The ungroomed Second A Course, Fourth Event Course, and Fourth A Course had shallow, irregular tracks and bumps.

The Shirakaba Course (pictured) and First A Course had well-packed, groomed granular snow surfaces that were easy to ski. In other news, the Kumanoyu Sunset Viewing Tour 2024, a round-trip sightseeing tour on the Third Quad without skis or snowboards, will be held on 3/29 (Fri.) and 3/30 (Sat.). (JPY2,000 for adults, JPY1,500 for elementary school students. One preschool-age child free with each paid adult; no advance registration required.)
