Despite the sudden warming on 3/24 (Sun.) and the rain from 3/25 (Mon.) to 3/26 (Tue.), Happo has been able to maintain a max base depth of more than 300 cm of snow near the end of March. With cold temperatures returning, the trees were tinged with rime ice this morning, and a blanket of fog was rolling in and out across the upper portion of the ski resort. A line had formed at the Alpen Quad (pictured) before it opened for business, mainly populated with hikers.

The south route of Usagidaira (pictured) was groomed with a hard granular snow surface. I spoke with a couple from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “We love your site. This is our fourth time to Happo this season. It was raining yesterday, so we gave up on skiing. I used to work part-time at a store at the foot of the mountain a long time ago.”

I ran into a pair of students from Osaka and Kyoto (pictured) who told me they were fans of Snownavi, and remarked, “This is the first time for us to run into a reporter from Snownavi. We’re staying at an accommodation at the foot of the mountain until the end of March. We always come here to ski during our breaks from work.” The groomed, hard-packed granular snow along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) had the best conditions for skiing this morning.

On the groomed portion of the Skyline Course (pictured), the well-packed granular snow base became looser and looser the further I slid down, and I emerged from below the fog after skiing down to the middle of the course. There were no exposed bushes or areas of thin snow on the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Wave, Kokusai Slope (*you can cut across), or Shirakaba Slope on the way down to the gondola base station, and each was covered with loose, groomed granular snow.
