Sugadaira REPORT

2024.03.28165cm / Cloudy

If you want to ski well-maintained, gentle, super wide slopes, the Taro / Davos areas in Sugadaira are the place to be! I spoke with a skier from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured) who was the first one on the Beat Lift this morning, who after greeting me told me, “Last night I stayed at the Sugadaira Sun Hotel (the beige building in the second picture). I came here first thing in the morning to ski the freshly groomed slopes this morning.”

On this same day last year, Sugadaira’s base was a mere 35 cm, and only 6 courses were open. Compare that to the current base depth of 165 cm and you can see just how much more snow there is. The Ura Davos Wave Course (pictured), which is exposed to the sun, had no snow at all at this point last year. This season, however, there are no exposed bushes or areas with thin snow cover, and the groomed snow coveres the entire width of the course.

My skis slid almost too well on the fine-grained, hard-packed groomed granular snow on both the Omote Davos West and East (first photo) courses, and I had to be careful to control my speed. The Omote Davos Panorama Course (pictured) and the Ura Davos Wave Course (second photo) also had hard, groomed granular snow. By 9:30 a.m. the outermost surface began to moisten.

Similarly, the Ura Davos Heart-no-mori Course (pictured), which was groomed with hard granular snow, eventually loosened up and became more moist, making it easier to ski. I spoke with a ski instructor, who told me, “There’s plenty of snow this year, so we should be able to ski until the resort’s scheduled last day.” The ongoing ski camps for elementary and junior high school students filled the slopes with a friendly atmosphere.
