To add some additional information about the Spring Festival that was mentioned in the last paragraph of yesterday’s report: This year’s festival will be held at the OAKLEY TERRACE (pictured) and will feature the now-regular talk show by nordic combined athletes Akito and Yoshito Watabe and former freestyle mogul athlete Aiko Uemura (*starting at 12:20pm), a raffle with great prizes (*tickets distribution starts at 10:30 a.m.), and also live music.

It was a pleasant morning with soft sunlight shining on the slopes and dark gray clouds gathered in the western sky. The southern route of Usagidaira (pictured, foreground) was groomed with a loose granular snow surface that was easy to ski. The area along the Alpen Quad had medium to large-sized moguls, and the soft snow conditions right from the beginning of the day made them more manageable.

On the other hand, both the groomed and ungroomed areas on the north-facing Kurobishi Slope had hard-packed granular snow early on. There were small clumps of snow scattered across the surface in spots on the groomed areas, but my edges held firm and I found it easy to ski. The Panorama and Riesen Slalom courses were groomed with loose granular snow that began to slush by 10:00.

I had a conversation with a man from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured, third from right), who told me, “I love your site! Our group is composed of both alumni who took junior lessons at Hakuba Happo-One Ski School and current juniors. We come from Tokyo, Kanagawa, Kyoto and other prefectures.” On the course leading back down to the bottom, some exposed dirt could be seen on the last part of Riesen, and the snow on the last part of Shirakaba only stretched the width of a single grooming machine.
