This season’s Early Spring Operation period for the Tsugaike Ropeway started on 3/2 (Sat.), with the ropeway running on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until 4/21 (Sun.) and daily from 4/27 (Sat.) to 5/6 (Mon.). Normally, the ropeway runs every 30 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., but additional departures are added when necessary. To ride the ropeway, you are required to submit a mountaineering plan.

This morning, Tsugaike was cloaked in fog that rolled and and out and was rising up as clouds to the ropeway summit station (pictured, elevation 1,829m). I had a quick chat with four people (pictured) who started hiking up toward Tenguhara and remarked, “We love your site! The weather is so nice, so we’re going up to Mt. Hakuba Norikura!”

The forest road between the ropeway summit station and the Tsugaike Hutte was groomed and easy to walk. The trail to Hakuba Oike (2nd photo) and Mizubasho Marsh (pictured) had a granular snow surface that was soft on top and moderately firm below. I came across a family from Tokyo (pictured) who told me they were fans of Snownavi, and added, “We are going to make a table and chairs out of snow and enjoy our annual spring snow picnic. Today we’ll boil water and make instant ramen.”

Course building work was underway along the Tsuga-no-mori No. 1 Pair for the BANKED SLALOM TSUGAIKE event being held tomorrow, 4/6 (Sat.). A staff member (pictured) working on the course said, “We’ve been working on the course all night, and luckily the weather forecast for tomorrow is good, so it looks like we will be able to hold the event safely.”
