It’s been more than 4°C above normal the last 10 days, and not only did the Nakiyama No. 3 Triple and Happo Riesen Quad close for the season yesterday, but the descending course connecting Riesen to Shirakaba and the gondola base station was also closed due to snowmelt at the end of Shirakaba. At the same time, the upper portion of the ski resort still has a base measuring over 100cm more than on the same day last year.

It was a pleasant morning with sunshine piercing through a spring-like hazy sky. I spoke with a woman from Gunma Prefecture (pictured, right), who told me, “She (pictured, left) is from Hong Kong, and we became friends at the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School group lesson we took yesterday. We decided to ski together again today.” It was warm, so many skiers were skiing with light spring jackets or no jacket altogether.

The Panorama Course (first photo) and Usagidaira Slope (pictured) were groomed with loose granular snow that was easy to ski, as my edges dug deep but my skis still slid well. Along the groomed Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the loose granular snow surface layer was thinner and I found the skiing there even more comfortable.

The famous steep slopes and deep moguls along the Alpen Quad (pictured) and the Kurobishi 3 Pair were free of exposed bushes and dirt, and I found myself wanting to lap the soft conditions. In other news, the Hakuba Happo Super Vertical Race 2024 will be held on 4/14 (Sun.), and the course will climb from Nakiyama to the Happo-ike Sanso, with an elevation gain of 1,000 meters.
