The rain that was falling yesterday morning turned to snow around 10:00 and stopped shortly after noon. It snowed a little bit again last night, but had cleared up by this morning. As I drove up Route 292 from the base of the mountain, I started to see fresh snow accumulated around Sun Valley, and the road to Kumanoyu became snowy and icy beyond the Shiga Kogen Sogo Kaikan 98.

This morning I spoke with a couple from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who said, “We love your site! We come to Shiga Kogen every November and every spring to ski. We thought the snow was done for the season and changed our tires from studless to normal, but now we have this snow. We drove really, really slowly this morning and managed to make it here ok.” By 8:00 a.m., the sun was shining and I could feel the warmth of the sun.
[Kumanoyu・Third Beginner Course]
The First A, First Shirakaba, Second Beginner, and Third Beginner (second photo) courses had a thin covering of slightly wet new (but light for this time of year!) snow that was piled up in places. The ungroomed areas of Second A, Third A, Third Rinkan, Fourth A (pictured), and Fourth Event had 3 to 5 cm of new snow on top of hard, granular snow surfaces marked with tracks and bumps.

The Umanose Course was groomed with a well-packed granular snow surface. In other news, the First Pair was originally scheduled to close on 4/7 (Sun.), but operation has been extended until 4/14 (Sun.) because of the abundant snow coverage. The First A, First Shirakaba (pictured), and First Mogul which are accessed by the lift, still have no exposed bushes or dirt, and are safe and comfortable to ski.
