Shiga REPORT

2024.04.27150cm / Partly Cloudy

Despite the warm weather at lower elevation areas, the skiable area at Yakebitaiyama has remained almost unchanged since our last report on 4/19 (Fri.). More specifically, both gondolas are running, and the open courses are Giant Slalom (pictured) → Gondola Contact and Panorama → South! And, with both gondolas starting at 6:00 a.m., the surface layer of the well-packed, groomed granular base had only softened a little.

Later on, around 7:30, the snow was loose and slushy, and the many tracks from skiers began to make the surface of the Giant Slalom Course (pictured) bumpy and uneven. It certainly felt like a typical Golden Week, as the slopes were packed with families and groups, including one family (pictured) who recognized I was with Snownavi and waved to me.

I spoke with a married couple from Tokyo who told me they occasionally check Snownavi’s resort reports, and added, “We can tell they’ve brought snow from other areas in order to maintain the conditions. It’s nice to have this much terrain to ski at this time of the year.” The Gondola Detour Course (pictured, right), which bypasses the lower part of the Giant Slalom Course and continues to the boarding area for the No. 2 Gondola, and the Connecting Route Course (pictured, left), had enough snow, which had been brought from other areas, to cover about half of the course width.

There was some exposed dirt in an area at the end of South, on the course that runs between Panorama (pictured) and South, but there were no areas of thin snow cover at all on Panorama (pictured), and I was able to ski from top to bottom without any worries. When I returned to the parking lot after finishing my report around 8:30 a.m., I found that the visitors who had come for the early-morning operation hours were putting away their skis, while the visitors coming for normal operating hours were beginning to arrive and get ready.

*The snow depth listed at the top of this report is the highest reported throughout the Shiga Kogen area. Currently, that amount of 150 cm is at Kumanoyu, while Yakebitaiyama has 100 cm.
