Last night’s rain had stopped by the time I arrived at the gondola summit station, and the top portions of the two open slopes, Usagidaira and Kurobishi, were covered with fog that rolled in and out continuously. Even though it was the middle of Golden Week, visitors were slow to show up as it was at the tail end of a three-day weekend and rain was in the forecast. Those skiing the steep slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), were careful to avoid the shrubs that had begun to poke out of the snow, as well as the dirt that was visible at the bottom of the moguls.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad was groomed with slushy granular snow, and even though the course width had narrowed, there was plenty of snow coverage and I was able to ski comfortably at a good speed on the groomed part of the slope. I met a skier from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! I’ve come to Happo more than 50 times this season using my HAKUBA VALLEY season pass.”

Incidentally, four restaurants are still open in Happo until the last day of the spring season: Pilar (pictured), Yeti, Karuizawa Primo, and the Kurobishi Bear’s Cafe. That means that even in the case of bad weather, you have plenty of options for taking a break. At Pilar, coffee and tea are only ¥300 before 10:00 a.m. each morning. I also recommend the delicious and hearty Pilar Hot Dog (pictured, JPY1,300).

Work has been done to add snow to the southern route of Usagidaira, and there were no exposed bushes or areas of thin snow, and I was able to ski without any concerns, though light rain began to fall again around 9:00 a.m. In other news, the “GREEN HAKUBA Clean Act.” event is set to take place on 5/ 6 (Mon., holiday) from 9:00 a.m. at the Sakka Kitaone Quad boarding area (*limited to the first 150 people).
