Tsugaike REPORT

2024.12.13122 cm / Cloudy

Welcome to the HAKUBA VALLEY, the holy land of JAPOW (Japan Powder)! Since the end of the pandemic, Tsugaike Mountain Resort has been seeing an increase in both Japanese and international visitors, though uests from England and Canada (pictured) are still a relatively rare sight! They shared, “We’re staying in the area for four days. Next up is a lesson at the ski school.”

While the wind wasn’t noticeable at the gondola summit station, occasional strong gusts could be felt on the Tsuga-no-mori slope, whipping around the roughly 1 cm of light, fresh snow topping the surface (pictured). The groomed sections offered well-packed powder snow conditions. Early in the morning, most visitors headed toward the Han-no-Ki slope, leaving the pristine corduroy tracks on Tsuga-no-Mori untouched for a good while.

Starting yesterday, 12/12 (Thurs.), the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad Lift is now operating, and the Sawa Course (pictured) branching off the Han-no-ki Slope has also officially opened. A patroller skiing during their off-hours (pictured) told me, “I’m looking forward to another great season! The snow around the snow machines is a bit firm, but having such great snow this early in the season is fantastic.”

The Han-no-ki slope had a well-packed, groomed powder snow surface, while the Sawa Course (pictured) offered slightly softer but still nicely packed powder conditions. Both were exceptionally enjoyable, making it easy to see why so many skiers opted for lapping these runs via the gondola. By the way, Burger King is opening at the gondola mid-station’s Yuki-no-hiroba starting today, 12/13 (Fri.)!
