Following the heavy snowfall that began yesterday, Tsugaike Mountain Resort has opened the Tsuga-no-mori slope and bottom half of the Han-no-ki slope, as well as the Karamatsu slope, allowing skiers to ski from top to bottom! There was more than 50cm of fresh snow on the ungroomed portions of Tsuga-no-mori, providing the delightful sensation of floating atop soft powder!

On the central, groomed section of Tsuga-no-mori and along the wide, pisten-packed run along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured), skiers were enjoying smooth turns on the moderately firm surface. I spoke with a pair of skiers from Kanagawa who told me, “We always follow your reports! Today’s our first day of the season. The snow feels great!”

The mid-to-lower sections of the Han-no-ki run were comfortably soft, with no bushes or thin patches of snow in sight, allowing for an uninterrupted 5 km long ride from the gondola base station to the bottom. On the steep section along the way, the ungroomed half of the slope offered the the chance to enjoy around 50cm of fluffy new snow.

I had a chat with a family from Saitama and another from Azumino (pictured), who commented, “We love your site! We’ve been friends since we were students, and today we both brought our families. Today is our first day of the season. To get such good snow on the first day is really amazing!” The snow surface at the end of the forest trail, while ungroomed, was almost flat and well-tracked.
