This morning I spoke with a ski patroller, who told me, “The snow we received yesterday was incredible. We’re eager to open the TSUGA POW DBD Area and the Gotemba Course, but it’ll take a bit more time. Today, though, anywhere you ski will be fantastic.” I got on the Tsuga No. 2 Pair Lift, which got moving 30 minutes earlier than scheduled, and was greeted with bird’s-eye views of the smooth, pristine slope ahead (pictured).

“The conditions are amazing! I think I’ll do at least 20 more runs!” said a snowboarder enjoying the un-groomed areas of Tsuga-no-Mori. Although slightly affected by last night’s strong winds, the light new snow—around 10 cm deep—combined with the soft base created a perfect, fluffy surface. The feeling of floating weightless on powder was fantastic!

A 40-meter-wide section of the Tsuga-no-mori Slope to the skier’s left side of the new artificial snow machines had been groomed. I skied the full 5-kilometer-long run starting alongside the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair, continuing along the rest of Han-no-ki, and finishing on the Karamatsu Slope in a single go, and found perfect conditions with moderately firm powder snow all the way to the bottom.

On the gondola ride back up, I met a man who commented, “I skied down to the gondola mid-station on my first run this morning, and the wide-open slopes were absolutely fantastic. Now, I’m heading out for my second run.” I also took some time and treated myself to a well-deserved second run. (Sorry editor!)
