Shiga REPORT

2024.12.0440cm / Cloudy

Ichinose Family opened on 12/3 (Tue.), and four courses are now open across Shiga Kogen. This morning I spoke with a skier from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! I bought a condo in Yudanaka and stay in Shiga Kogen during the winter. It’s great to be able to ski courses this wide at the beginning of the season!”

The Ichinose Family Front Slope (pictured), which is now skiable thanks to artificial snow topping off natural snow, was still only about half of the full winter width, but was plenty spacious at around 50 meters. I really enjoyed my runs on the flat, moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface, which was perfect for gaining speed.

A group of three people from Kyoto, Aichi, and Nagano prefectures (pictured) called out to me, saying they were fans of Snownavi, and adding, “Yesterday the slopes were hard packed, but this morning they’re just right, with good edge bite. Conditions are great!” Currently the four open course(s) are independent of each other and cannot be linked on skis yet.

The lower part of Takamagahara, served by the Takamagahara Second Triple, the wet snow surface was moderately soft, but my skis ran well despite the gentle slope angle. I overheard a student on a school excursion who fell down say, “Ah, I think I cracked by butt!” There was a lot of laughter coming from the vibrant slopes. In other news, the “Shiga Kogen Opening Festival” will be held this weekend on 12/7 (Sat.), and there will be a raffle with fantastic prizes from sponsors such as Ogasa Ski, Descente, Montbell and more!
