Tsugaike REPORT

2024.12.0480cm / Cloudy

Monday, 12/2, and Tuesday, 12/3, were pleasant sunny days and it was a relatively warm morning today as well, but last weekend’s heavy snowfall means that Tsugaike Mountain Resort still has an impressive 80cm base, one of the top tallies in Japan! And, according to the forecast, another cold air mass is expected to move in again tomorrow, and snow is expected to continue through 12/8 (Sun.)!

The currently open area alongside the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair Lift had a hard, groomed wet snow surface with a flat finish. Those conditions meant that my edges held firm and my skis ran well. There were some fallen leaves scattered on the slopes due to the strong winds last night, but there were no areas of exposed bushes or thin snow cover. Despite fog rolling in and out repeatedly, there was no problem with visibility and I was able to enjoy pleasant turn after pleasant turn.

In terms of restaurants, TSUGABASE, located in the Tsugaike Yokocho area next to the Gondola base station, is now open in addition to Kitchen Tsuga-no-mori, which opened on the same day as the resort itself. TSUGABASE’s Pulled Pork Burger (pictured, left), featuring homemade coleslaw and pork braised for 10 hours, comes with fries and is highly recommended. WASHIYA, serves the popular Jamaican soul food, Jerk Chicken Sandwich (pictured, right), is scheduled to open on 12/10 (Tue.).

Today I spoke with two visitors from Nagano and Azumno cities, who said, “We love your site! We wanted to come on the opening day, but couldn’t make it, so today is our first runs. The slopes are still hard, but it looks like they’ll loosen up a little during the day.” Expectations are high for the upcoming opening of the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured), which is now lined with the latest artificial snow machines.
