This is the first weekend of winter operation for the the Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field, which opened yesterday, 12/20 (Fri.). In addition to the planned opening of the South, East, VIEW C, and VIEW D slopes, the Sunny Valley Course has also been opened, bringing the status for the resort to “mostly open” (over 50% of terrain accessible). The snow conditions on the vast South Slope, with its impeccable corduroy patterns (pictured), were ideal, offering firm, easy-to-ski powder snow.

The groomed Sunny Valley Course featured a moderately firm powder snow surface at the start (pictured), followed by firmer, machine-groomed natural snow mixed with artificial snow toward the middle and end. The morning started off clear, but clouds gradually moved in from the direction of the Northern Alps. By the way, on the new gondola, both skis and snowboards can be brought into the cabin for the ride to the top.

Now, continuing from my previous report, the renovated snow outdoor area at the top of Iwatake, “IWATAKE WHITE PARK,” has added two tepee tents and a fire pit. Also, in addition to enjoying the magnificent mountain views at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR, visitors can have fun on the Yoo-Hoo! Swing, Yoo-Hoo! Ice Slider, and on a Buggy Cruise. It’s now also possible to relax with friends and family around a fire.

Here, with the theme of “Fire Education,” you can bake pizzas (starting at JPY3,000) in a small pizza oven, or roast marshmallows (JPY500 each) over the fire pit before partaking. These are just a few of the ways Hakuba Iwatake continues to actively offer experiences that are enjoyable for non-skiers visiting for tourism purposes.
