Today, 12/20 (Fri.), the Milky Four and No. 6 Pair lifts started operating, opening up the Soft Cream Course (pictured, back left) and the Powder Snow Course (pictured, foreground) for skiing. With this, Hakuba Goryu & Hakuba47, one of Japan’s premier major slopes, is now “fully open” (over 80% of runs accessible)! This morning, temperatures at the base dropped to -14°C, thanks to radiative cooling, just like yesterday.

In addition, there have been no warm days, even at the resort’s lower areas, since the opening at the end of November. Both the freshly groomed Powder Snow Course (pictured) and Toomi Slope, where a fair amount of new snow accumulated during the day yesterday, were in perfect condition this morning. The moderately soft, flat finish allowed me to repeat turns just the way I wanted.

In particular, I enjoyed the Powder Snow Course (pictured, 700m, max. 19° slope, avg. 15°), which is wide and sees fewer skiers, allowing me to enjoy runs on untracked corduroy again and again. The moderately firm, groomed powder snow on the Soft Cream Course was also easy to ski on.

I spoke with two visitors from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We love Snownavi! We timed our first day of the season to coincide with the opening of the Iimori Slope. The snow quality is amazing, and we’re so happy.” Starting tomorrow, 12/21 (Sat.), night skiing will also begin on the Toomi Slope (from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.)!
