The first winter system since 11/30 (Sat.) has arrived! While the rain at the base yesterday during the day turned to snow late at night, there wasn’t much accumulation by dawn, leaving concerns about the conditions higher up. However, upon stepping off the Goryu Telecabin, which started on schedule at 8:15 a.m., I was greeted by a strong wind carrying dry, rapidly falling snow—a promising sign of winter in full swing!

The Panorama Course (pictured) featured a groomed wet snow surface with a powdery texture, and had about 5 cm of light new snow on top. It felt incredibly satisfying to carve through and scatter the fresh layer of snow while skiing. It seems that any substantial snowfall on the mountain only really began this morning, as the new snow depth in the ungroomed areas increased from about 10cm before my visit to nearly 20cm by the time I finished.

By 8:50 a.m., the Alps 3rd Pair lift began operating, opening up the Grand Prix, Technical, and Super Courses for skiing! With this, 12 courses in total, including those at Hakuba 47, are now open. On the Grand Prix Course (pictured), which had been groomed to the width of three grooming machines, I was able to enjoy smooth skiing with a light 5 to 10cm topping of new snow.

The upper part of Route 8 (pictured) had well-packed, groomed wet snow base that also had about 5cm of new snow on top. A couple from Nagano’s Shiojiri City (pictured) shared, “We always read your reports! This is our third season since moving from Osaka. It looks like it’s still going to snow a lot!” Indeed, the weather forecast shows snow symbols all the way through 12/8 (Sun.).
