On 12/21 (Sat.), Happo officially reached “fully open” status (over 80% of the slopes accessible)! This morning, under the influence of a winter weather system, strong winds temporarily halted the gondola and upper lifts. Shifting plans, I headed to the Olympic Course II, where a couple from Nagoya (pictured) greeted me by saying, “We always read your reports! It’s great that the Kokusai 1 Pair is running. The fresh powder feels so soft and enjoyable!”
[Olympic Course Ⅱ]
The ungroomed steep slopes of the Olympic Course II often boast excellent snow quality, even on the lower sections, thanks to its north-facing aspect. This morning’s 25 to 30 cm of fresh snow was slightly wind-packed, but still retained a fluffy texture. Combined with the soft, undulating base below, it provided a delightful experience, and had skiers exclaiming things like, “It’s better than I expected!” and “That was nice!”

On the firmly-groomed powder snow surfaces of Sakka Wave (pictured) and the lower section of the Kokusai Slope, I was able to carve turn after turn with precision. Notably, there were no bushes or thinly covered spots all the way to the base. Strong winds occasionally swept through the lower part of the ski area, lifting snow off the slopes and trees and swirling it along.

The moderately firm, groomed powder base on the Sakka Slope (pictured) and the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track allowed for smooth, enjoyable turns. Along the Sakka 2 Pair, beginners and novice skiers could be seen gliding leisurely or taking lessons. Meanwhile, the soft tracked sections on of the steep section of Kitaone were blanketed in 20 to 30 cm of fluffy new snow, offering a delightfully fresh experience.
