REPORT

At the summit of Iwatake, a biting chill set in as dry snow was carried sideways by a cold north wind. I met two visitors from Toyama Prefecture, with one of them (pictured) saying, “I always check your reports. The snow quality is excellent, and it feels so good!” The groomed South Slope had about 3 cm of fresh, light snow on top of a pleasantly soft powder surface.

I spoke with a father from Shiga Prefecture (pictured, fourth from left), who shared, “Yesterday was our first time at Iwatake. Since the snowfall picked up yesterday from afternoon to evening, we decided to return this morning, expecting great conditions. Just as we hoped, the Five Side had about 30 cm of fresh snow and was fantastic!” When the 5sen South Lift had to temporarily halt operations due to a mechanical issue, those left at the base of the South Slope gathered for a group photo!

As I was wondering what to do next, within ten minutes of the lift stoppage, patrol staff began transporting people back to the top via snowmobile. It was my first time riding a snowmobile, and I was thrilled! I chatted with another person who commented, “You don’t get many chances to experience that, do you? You can really sense the speed, so that made it really fun!”

The Sunny Valley Course featured groomed packed powder up to the junction with White Ribbon, transitioning to a groomed wet snow surface beyond that point, and about 10 cm of fresh, light snow covered the base. Even as I finished my report around 9:30 a.m., the snow continued to fall steadily without showing any signs of letting up.
