Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort opened today, 11/22 (Fri.), three days earlier than last year, thanks to extensive use of artificial snow machines! The Stage 3 Lift (445m) is now operating, providing access to the Urataro Family East Course (pictured). Lift rides were free on opening day, and the course offered a width of 5 to 8 meters with a reported base depth of 30cm. The groomed surface was in excellent condition with no visible brush or other issues.

I spoke with a pair of visitors from Nagano City (pictured), who shared, “We came out because we heard it was free. The snow was pretty hard, and when I fell, I slid on my backside and couldn’t stop! Another skier from Chiba riding the Stage 3 Lift commented, “I always read your updates! The slope gradient is great, and it was surprisingly smooth and fun to ski on.” A snowboarder from Hakuba added, “I love your site. The run is narrow, but being on the snow is so enjoyable.” Many others also shared kind greetings and comments with me. Thank you all for your kind words and support!

Incidnetally, a bright blue sky greeted visitors this morning, as if celebrating Sugadaira’s opening day (pictured). Currently, the snow coverage ends just before the lift boarding area, so visitors need to walk about 30 meters to reach the lift (you can attach your skis or snowboard just before boarding). Amongst outdoor ski resorts, Sugadaira is the fifth to open in Japan this season, following Yeti (opened 10/25, temporarily closed 10/28 to 11/7), Karuizawa Prince (opened 11/1), Whitepia Takasu (opened 11/9, temporarily closed 11/13 to 22), and Okuibuki (opened at 8 a.m. on 11/22).

*For dining options, the Alyeska restaurant and MEL’s, known for its baked curry, are both within a 10-minute walk. The slope-side Restaurant Wing, located on the first floor of the Sugadaira Sun Hotel, is scheduled to open on 11/30 (Sat.).
