If you’re looking for a firm, fast slope, the Shinshu Sugadaira Kogen Pine Beak Ski Area is the place to be! On weekends and during the New Year holidays, the Omatsu No. 1 Quad Lift starts running at 7 a.m., and by around 6:30 a.m. today, while it was still a bit dark outside, skiers and snowboarders begin gathering near the lift station. A skier who rode the lift with me shared, “I always have lunch at Yawataya (pictured). I recommend the beef udon—it’s delicious!”

This morning featured powder snow conditions across the resort. A skier practicing on the slalom course remarked, “This place is perfect for training, and today’s conditions make it especially easy to practice.” About half of the GO-no-hara course (pictured) was sectioned off for slalom practice, but the general skiing area was also well-maintained, with a nicely packed surface that was smooth and easy to ski.

The Omatsuyama Family Course offered a firm, tightly packed surface, perfect for enjoying the speed Sugadaira is known for. The Holiday Course featured similarly well-compacted, firm groomed snow. Despite being a gentle slope, it provided excellent glide.

Around 7:10 a.m., the snowfall eased and blue sky began to peek through. The Champion Course (pictured), which opened for skiing on 12/25 (Wed.), was reserved for slalom practice today. Meanwhile, the ungroomed Omatsuyama Course, with only a few visible patches of brush, offered nearly untouched, smooth powder—a perfect opportunity to enjoy the slope all to yourself.
