Madarao Kogen Ski Resort now boasts “fully open” status (over 80% of terrain open), with 28 skiable slopes (out of a total of 32), including 7 tree-run courses! With Adventure Aisle already open, taking the No. 13 Lift gives you so many options for your descent that it’s hard to decide which way to go. In terms of weather, this morning, dry, powdery snow was gently falling.

While the ungroomed World Cup slope, still showing yesterday’s tracks, caught some glances, many skiers opted for the groomed Champion Slope (pictured), with comments like “This feels way better!” and “Today’s a groomer day.” Not only Champion but also the Shirakaba Course, Utopia, Paradise, and Beginner A all featured soft, groomed powder snow, making for excellent and easy riding conditions.

The groomed, north-facing Crystal Slope (pictured) offered the perfect powder conditions with a moderately soft surface. Both the edge grip and the glide of my skis were excellent, making for a comfortable ride. By around 8:50 a.m., a line had formed at the No. 13 Lift. The snow, which had temporarily eased, picked up in intensity again around 9:30 a.m.

The families skiing slowly along the 1,400m-long, 18-degree max, 8-degree average Sky View Slope (pictured), which runs along the edge of Madarao, left an impression. A couple from Tokyo, who had just finished the SAWA I section at the beginning of the course, said, “Oh, it’s Snownavi! The narrow part at the end of SAWA I felt like a bobsled track, which was fun. When we came last weekend, there was less snow, so it was even more thrilling today.”
