Happy New Year! Today I crossed paths with a group from Omaezaki City in Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured), who shared, “We love your site! We’re windsurfing friends who came here to snowboard. It’s always a tough decision between hitting the slopes or heading to the waves, as it’s windsurfing season right now too. The guy in the front left of the photo, Takara Ishii, has competed in the Windsurfing World Cup.”

This morning, the Mountain Side of the resort was shrouded in thick fog. The groomed East Slope (pictured), South Slope, Sawa Course, VIEW C, and VIEW D featured firm surfaces of slightly damp snow with a powdery texture. VIEW C and D, which are flanked by trees on both sides, had thinner fog cover, offering better visibility and making them feel easier to navigate.

At the IWATAKE WHITE PARK dog run, Rhea-chan (pictured) enjoyed playing in the snow while her owner shared, “We came here because I heard I could play with my dog at Iwatake.” Within the IWATAKE WHITE PARK, currently open attractions include two teepee tents, HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR, the Yoo-Hoo! Swing, buggy cruises, and a slope for kids and beginners!

I had a chat with a father from Fukuoka Prefecture (pictured, second from right) who told me, “We come to Hakuba every year for skiing and snowboarding. This year, we brought the kids for the first time. We’re staying for about a week at my mother’s place since she recently moved to Nagano.” The well-packed, wet snow on the groomed Sunny Valley Course made for a smooth descent, and the view cleared as I passed below the clouds near the White Ribbon junction.
