Happy New Year! The atmosphere this morning was magical, with gently falling snow, light mist, and trees adorned with frost. While it wasn’t as warm as yesterday or New Year’s Day, today, 1/3 (Fri.), also felt relatively mild without much of a chill. The No. 13 Lift (pictured), which started running slightly late at 9:20 a.m., quickly saw a line of eager riders waiting to board.

In the thick mist, around 10 to 15 cm of light new snow had settled on the ungroomed upper portion of the Crystal Slope (pictured). From those who skied it, I heard comments like, “Wow, the base is soft!” and “It’s better than I expected!” On the other hand, the ungroomed sections of Crystal Bowl and the upper part of Giant, which also had 10 to 15 cm of light new snow, had a hard base and were more technical.

Going back to the start of the day, I met a couple from Nagano’s Chikuma City (pictured), who told me, “I’m pretty sure we’ve seen Snownavi before! We’ve been skiing at places like Myoko Suginohara and others since the end of the year, but today we’re enjoying our home slope, Madarao!” Visitors were arriving early, and before long, lines formed for the Super Quad and No. 2 Quad.
[Giant]
The middle to end portion of Crystal (pictured), Champion, the middle to end of Giant, Carving, Shirakaba, and Paradise all offered great conditions for skiing with moderately soft, groomed powder snow topped by 1 to 3 cm of new snow. My skis also glided smoothly on the Ocean ViewSslope, where the firmly packed, groomed powder base had a layer of 3 to 5 cm of new snow on top.
