Happy New Year, and best wishes for the year ahead! The morning began quietly with large snowflakes gently falling. The relatively warm weather yesterday and on New Year’s Day influenced the snow conditions, and as a result, the groomed Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) and Ikenota Slope featured firm, slightly moist snow with a powdery feel. Each was topped with 2 to 5 cm of light fresh snow, making for smooth, enjoyable tracks.

On the skier’s right side towards the end of the Ipponmatsu Course, there was a pristine layer of about 10 cm of fresh snow blanketing the surface. I watched as visitors dug their edges into the flat base below, and the snow flowed smoothly across their snowboard (pictured). Over at the super-wide, groomed Ikenota Slope, a light topping of about 2 cm of fresh snow made for a leisurely and fun ride.

The No. 3 Quad (pictured, background) has been operating since 12/27 (Fri.), opening up the Rabbit, Snake, and Kamoshika courses for skiing. Today, the Rabbit Course had a groomed wet snow surface with a powdery texture, topped with a light layer of fresh snow. The depth of the fresh snow varied between 5 to 20 cm due to the influence of the wind, adding an interesting dynamic to the run.

Earlier in the day, I spoke with a woman from Osaka (pictured) who said, “I’m working part-time at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba. Since I’m graduating from university, this will be my last season here. The snow quality is excellent and the slopes are really easy to ski on.” To all the resort workers out there—time is limited, so make the most of your experience!
