Happo-one REPORT

2025.01.04280cm / Snowy

The “HAPPO First Tracks” program has officially begun! (Available on weekends and holidays between 1/4 (Sat.) and 3/2 (Sun.), starting at 7:30 a.m., JPY7,000 each for the first 30 general participants, and JPY3,000 each for the first 30 season pass holders.) This morning, a skier I shared the lift with remarked, “It’s great to have the chance to ski on a perfectly untouched slope. This morning in particular, both the fresh snow and groomed runs were absolutely fantastic.”

Significant snowfall occurred from last night to this morning, similar to the heavy snow on 12/7 (Sat.), and was brought on by a low-pressure system moving northeast over the Sea of Japan (details below). A ski patroller shared, “We got more snow than expected, and it’s really good quality.” On the ungroomed steep slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), around 40cm of fluffy fresh snow provided an amazing experience!

The ungroomed sections along the Skyline 2 Pair (pictured) were covered with 30 to 35cm of fluffy fresh snow. With the New Year holiday spirit still in full swing, early visitors quickly tracked all the ungroomed slopes in the mid-to-upper areas of the resort. The central part of Skyline and the area along the Kurobishi Quad offered perfectly groomed powder surfaces that were moderately packed and very enjoyable to ski on.

Thick fog lingered around the lower section of Skyline (pictured), but it didn’t hinder visibility enough to really affect the skiing. The early section of Riesen, covered with up to 3cm of light fresh snow, had a moderately firm, groomed powder base, while the lower section was mixed with artificial snow and was noticeably firmer. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Wave, and Shirakaba Slope were also groomed with excellent, firmly packed powder snow.

*When a low-pressure system (characterized by counterclockwise winds in the Northern Hemisphere) moves northeast over the Sea of Japan, clouds flowing in from the west are rapidly cooled as they pass over the 3,000-meter peaks of the Northern Alps, resulting in heavy snowfall. This phenomenon showcases Hakuba’s distinctive winter conditions and snowfall patterns.
