Yesterday, the final day of the “miracle 9-day holiday,” was a clear, sunny day, the first since New Year’s Day. This morning, the valley was covered in wispy clouds, but upon taking the first ride on the Goryu Telecabin at 8:15 a.m. to reach Alps-daira, cold, strong winds were blowing from the west, and dry snow was coming down hard. The Grand Prix Course (pictured) featured well-packed, easily skiable powder snow grooming, and was topped with 1 to 2cm of fresh snow.

I expected the resort to return to the quiet conditions typical of a January weekday, but the crowds arrived early this morning. The Panorama Course and upper part of Route 8 (pictured) had moderately firm, groomed powder bases, with up to 2cm of light new snow scattered across the slopes, creating smooth and easily skiable conditions.

I skied down the Dynamic Course, Woody Course, and the Toomi Slope, and found the well-packed powder snow grooming remained consistent, providing easy and smooth skiing. By the way, the GORYU BUMPs moguls area has been created on the skiers’ right side of the upper Toomi Slope (pictured), where I was able to enjoy the well-maintained, moderately sized moguls.

Around 9:30 a.m., snow began to lightly fall across the lower part of the ski resort. The Powder Snow Course (pictured), which was groomed widely, featured a moderately firm, powder snow base. The Soft Cream Course mostly had a firmer wet snow surface with a powdery feel, but the area around the snowmaking machines was a bit harder to ski on.
