Shiga REPORT

2025.01.07150cm / Snow Clouds

On my way to Shiga Kogen, the light rain that had been falling at the Kita Shinshu Yamanouchi Michi-no-Eki turned into snow at the Kamibayashi Chain Fastening and Removal Area. After enjoying a run on the Diamond Slope, where the moderately firm powder surface was groomed widely, I headed over to Terakoya (elevation 1,890m to 2,054m). The warm temperatures down in town this morning seemed like a distant memory as I was greeted by the stunning scenery that only the harsh winter season can offer (pictured).

The ungroomed LIPS Course (pictured) was smooth and pristine, thanks to about 10cm of fresh, dry snow that had accumulated. The strong winds from last night had given the snow a soft, fluffy texture, which, combined with the gentle underlying base, made for a very enjoyable experience. The snow eventually stopped falling around 9 a.m.

The corduroy patterns of the Philosophy and Eternal slopes were made from perfectly compacted, flawlessly groomed powder snow. While the official snow depth for Terakoya today was reported as 60cm, the coverage was more than adequate, and despite only four slopes being open, the variety of ways to enjoy them made me feel like I could easily spend an entire day skiing here.

At the torii gate (pictured) along the slope leading to the Terakoya 1st Pair, foreign visitors could be seen offering prayers. By the way, this season, Shiga Kogen has launched the “Shiga Kogen × Uber Rideshare” service. Additionally, a “Monkey Show in Shiga Kogen” will be held on 1/27 (Mon.), 1/29 (Wed.), and 1/31 (Fri.).
