This morning, I met a brother and sister from Tokyo, with the brother (pictured, left) telling me, “I always read your updates! We arrived by tour bus this morning and will be staying at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba for two nights.” The sister (pictured, right) added, “This time, my brother is treating me to the whole trip. He’s so generous!” Around 8 a.m., light snow with a bit of moisture began falling on the slopes that had been received a bit of sunlight earlier in the morning.

I enjoyed gliding down the Mt. Hieda Forest Course, where the groomed wet snow surface had the feeling of powder, and the 3 cm of light new snow on top added a nice sensation. The Itadaira Slope (pictured) was ungroomed but had a well-packed, almost flat base that also had 2 to 3cm of new snow. I was able to turn comfortably without catching my skis on the snow.

I spoke with a family from Australia (pictured) who shared, “We’re staying at a villa in the Meitetsu Resort area for a month. We really love Hakuba— the scenery, the snow, and the people.” With fewer Japanese visitors on this weekday in January, foreign guests were more noticeable.

On the Rabbit, Snake, and Ikenota areas, the moderately firm, groomed wet snow was topped with 2 to 3 cm of slightly damp new snow. On all of these runs, my skis glided smoothly, allowing me to turn as I pleased.
