Last night temperatures were relatively warm, and sleet was falling at JR Hakuba Station (elevation 697m). However, this morning in Tsugaike, the snow quality was excellent, with only a slight hint of moisture even at the base of the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope (elevation 800m)—true to Tsugaike’s reputation. Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair lift (pictured), the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface proved to be the perfect slope for a warm-up run early in the morning.

Amid heavy snowfall and a light westerly wind, the groomed conditions on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured) were just as smooth and enjoyable as along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair lift. In the ungroomed areas, there was 10 to 15 cm of slightly moist fresh snow to be found. Thanks to the soft base layer, skiing was comfortable and free from any jolts or snags, making for an enjoyable ride.

As I made my way down past the top of the groomed Shirakaba Slope (pictured), the snow had noticeably more moisture. I had a chat with a mother (pictured, second from left) from Nagano’s Saku City, who shared, “I occasionally check your reports! Three generations of our family are staying our here for three days and two nights. Today’s slopes are soft, and even the kids find them easy to ski on.”

The Gotemba Course (pictured), which connects the end of Tsuga-no-mori to the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair lift, offered a fun ride with its wave-like groomed undulations. A snowboarder coming down from the TSUGA POW DBD area shared, “The DBD zone was a bit bumpy, but I still had a great time!”
