With the arrival of a winter pressure pattern, a strong cold front brought heavy snowfall yesterday that intensified further in the evening. Today, the dense, steadily falling snow created a hazy backdrop, as seen in this photo that shows the former Hilltop area from a distance. Many visitors flocked to this spot and FIVE SIDE, drawn by the promise of fresh powder.

The former Hilltop area (a non-groomed shortcut from the South Slope to the Sawa Course, pictured) had about 30cm of fresh snow that was slightly wind-packed from last night, but offered fluffy powder conditions. Meanwhile, the Sawa Course featured 5 to 10cm of light new snow atop a well-packed, groomed powder base, creating a smooth and enjoyable run.

In addition to the two courses mentioned above, there are plenty of runs at Iwatake where you can enjoy fresh powder, including Sonezawa (pictured, background), Dangan, Hikage (pictured), View A, View B, and White Ribbon. Among these, Hikage (pictured) retained pristine snow for an extended period relative to the others, thanks to its less convenient access.

Hikage (pictured) offered exceptional flotation with no bottoming out, thanks to the approximately 40cm of fluffy fresh snow! The South Slope and the top to mid-section of the Sunny Valley Course featured moderately firm groomed powder, while the latter part of Sunny Valley was a firmer mix of artificial and and natural snow. The few centimeters of fresh snow topping these areas was light and powdery.
