As I traveled north from JR Hakuba Station, the clouds overhead thickened, and the surroundings grew dimmer. After arriving at the resort, I ran into a man from Germany living in Tokyo and a local woman from Otari Village, who told me, “We always read your reports! We became friends during a backcountry workshop.” The woman (pictured, left) then added, “I’m just getting familiar with Hakunori, and today I’m heading to the Sky View Slope for the first time!”

Amid the heavy snowfall continuing from yesterday, the groomed Highway (pictured) and Kamoshika courses featured a fluffy layer of 10 to 12 cm of new snow atop a base of moderately packed powder. A patrol member shared with me, “The snow was pretty wet from the day before yesterday until yesterday morning, but with the drop in temperature and the snow now, it’s back to powder conditions all the way to the bottom.”

I realized that meant the ungroomed steep slopes at the lower part of the ski area, like the Snake Course (pictured) and Expert Course, should also be in excellent condition, and I went to have a look. With 40 to 50cm of fluffy new snow combined with the undulating terrain, these courses offered a unique powder run experience, distinct from the Sky View. Skiers descending the slopes could be heard exclaiming, “Amazing!” and “Absolutely fantastic!”

The Rabbit Course and Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured), with approximately 10cm of fresh snow on a well-packed powder base, also provided smooth and enjoyable runs. Students I met from Nippon Sport Science University (pictured) commented, “We know Snownavi! We’ve improved significantly over the last three days, and plan to keep skiing in the future.” (Definitely, keep it up!)
