Following the prediction that after heavy snowfall in Hakuba, the full-on winter atmospheric pressure system would bring heavy snow to the northern Shinshu & Myoko regions, I headed to the powder paradise of Madarao Kogen. From the No. 7 parking lot, I made my way to the Super Quad lift, passing through the freshly groomed and incredibly smooth and easy-to-ski Utopia Course (pictured).

I was eagerly anticipating “Madapow”, but to my surprise, there was only about 10 cm of fresh snow even at the top of the resort. Refocusing my energy, I entered the Champion Slope, where I found a firm, groomed powder base with just enough new snow to cover the corduroy pattern. I enjoyed using the slope’s gradient to my advantage and making turns at speed.

Being a weekday in January, visitors were a bit slow to turn out. The main run, Giant, had a softer, moderately packed, groomed powder snow surface compared to Champion. At the lower part of Giant, the Free Ride Park (pictured) is currently set up with a 3m kicker, a 3m tabletop, a 6m rail, and a 6m box.

I had the pleasure of meeting a snowboarder from Nagano Prefecture’s Nakano City on the Super Quad (pictured), who greeted me good morning, and added, “I wish it had snowed a bit more.” Even so, with this amount of new snow, the tree runs at Madarao are still a lot of fun! I later entered the River Line and also enjoyed the new snow on SAWA1.
